Think Green

Recently, we have been immersed in media accounts of the causes and effects of global warming and the diminishing supply of fossil fuels. As Americans, we consume much of the planet's energy. But some very simple changes in behavior can have positive consequences. These simple changes can also save us some money.

Here are some things to consider:
  • Replace regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs
  • Install a programmable thermostat to regulate the temperature of your home
  • Change your furnace / air conditioner filters every two months
  • When replacing appliances, only buy those with the EPA Energy Star label
  • Install low-flow shower heads and water conserving toilets
  • Recycle: Re-use takes less energy
  • Plant a tree on your property; a tree can absorb a ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime, the shade can reduce your cooling bill in the summertime
  • Turn the lights off when you leave the room
  • When buying your next car, consider a hybrid
  • If you do not buy a hybrid, consider a 4-cyclinder vehicle
  • Keep your vehicle tires properly inflated (proper inflation can improve gas mileage up to 3%)
  • Consider which of your errands can actually be accomplished with your bike
