On November 28, District 228 high schools (Bremen, Tinley Park, Hillcrest, Oak Forest) hosted their annual Senior Citizen Luncheon. This event has been held for more than 30 years in the District and continues to see a massive turnout and receive tremendous support from both staff and students. This year, District 228 served over 400 senior citizens with about 100 senior citizens in attendance at each school.
The luncheon started as a way to thank a group of community members who are taxpayers and continue to support students' education even though they no longer have children of their own still attending school in the District. Today, the luncheon continues to serve its original purpose but has turned into an event allowing students and staff alike to meet community members they may have never had the chance to interact with otherwise.
Aside from the meal, each school finds a way to include their students and bring a fun and entertaining atmosphere to the day. Some students lead the seniors in bingo, school bands come out to play tunes, raffles are held, and other various activities and celebrations take place. Throughout the entire event, students and staff volunteer to help distribute meals and can even be seen sitting at tables as they get to know their guests.
To be invited to this annual event, senior citizens must live in the District 228 boundaries which include the neighborhoods of Midlothian, Posen, Oak Forest, Country Club Hills, Tinley Park, Markham, and Hazel Crest. Senior Citizens on file from previous years will receive an invitation by mail with RSVP information. Those who are not on file or have moved, but still live in the District and would like to attend in future years, can reach out to the District 228 Administration Center in November or October of upcoming years and ask to for additional information at 708-389-1175.
