Sidewalk Open House

Open House For New Sidewalk Grant

The City of Oak Forest has been awarded a $1.17 million grant to construct over 15,000 linear feet of new sidewalk in neighborhoods near the Oak Forest METRA station. The funding was obtained through both the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program (CMAQ) and the Regional Transit Authority’s (RTA) Access to Transit Program.

The project is intended to increase access to the Oak Forest METRA station while also enhancing the neighborhoods and increasing pedestrian safety and accessibility. The focus of the project is the installation of new sidewalks to fill in the existing gaps in the project area northwest of the train station. The project area was previously determined by its proximity to the METRA station, which made it eligible for these outside funds.

The new sidewalk project area is between 155th and 158th Streets and between Long and Lamon Avenues. For additional details please see images below.

A community open house will be held on Tuesday October 15, 2019 at 7 p.m. at Oak Forest City Hall in the Council Chambers to give residents the opportunity to review and comment on engineering plans for a proposed sidewalk. This open house is targeted to residents who live in the area where sidewalk improvements will be made, but all community residents are welcome. Construction for this project is anticipated in 2020.

For more information, please contact Travis Bandstra, Director of Economic Development at 708-444-4803 or tbandstra@oak-forest.org.
