Animal Control: Raccoons with Distemper

Raccoons With Distemper

You may have come across a raccoon acting strangely, during the day, roaming about the outside of your home. There are a few reasons why they do this. Activity during the day is not always an indicator of disease. They do still get things done during the day occasionally like search for food. But, with recent news of raccoon distemper, the symptoms are not easily recognizable for the average person. If you see a raccoon in your yard, on your porch, on your deck or on your front lawn, it’s a good idea to call animal control to assess the situation.

Distemper is caused by a single-stranded RNA virus, same family of viruses that cause measles. This is why it’s important to have your dogs and cats up to date on their vaccines. Is it contagious to humans? The distemper virus is capable of surviving in the human body, but it has not evolved the ability to infect and reproduce human cells. However, exposure to distemper in a dog can make you a carrier of the disease, even though it shows no symptoms. The resulting infection is completely asymptomatic.

How do raccoons contract distemper? The disease is spread when animals have direct contact with body fluids or droppings from an infected animal. Not all raccoons contract the disease and many survive. Symptoms of raccoon distemper are discharge from eyes and nose, rough coat of fur, and neurological signs like disorientation. Sometimes raccoons will not show any signs or symptoms. To discourage raccoons from your yard, do not leave food outside, make sure garbage cans are secure, and eliminate debris like piles of branches or logs. Remember to NOT feed raccoons intentionally as this can spread diseases further by attracting them to artificial food sources.

Raccoons are essential to our ecosystem despite how mischievous they can be. They clean up carrion, they distribute seeds and berries, and they dine on other species we consider pests.
