Keep It Local

Stay Focused Around Buses and Schools

from District 142 Superintendent

School District 142 Superintendent Dr. Paul McDermott sent this letter last week to remind all community members to stay alert and mindful when driving around buses and schools.

Good afternoon Forest Ridge School District 142 Parents, Guardians, and Community Members:

In light of the recent tragedy in Indiana involving school-aged children being struck by a vehicle as they made their way to their school bus, and with the winter months approaching which bring about challenging road conditions, it’s a good time for us to all pause and reflect on the manner in which we operate motor vehicles on and around school property. We have had several close calls around our schools and as always, the safety and security of our students is our primary concern.

Please take an extra minute or two each morning to ensure that cell phones are not being utilized while driving, especially in school zones, that speed limits are strictly adhered to, that all drivers are following bus “STOP” sign arms and safety lights, and that we are stopping and yielding when indicated.  Be aware of school personnel who are helping to ensure our children get to and from sidewalks, buses and car drop-offs and pick-ups.

The worst tragedy that can strike a community is the loss of one of our children. Again, please take a few extra moments of time when heading to and from school to ensure you’re not running late and rushing through school zones. Please be patient during pick-up and drop-off, and extend kindness to other drivers as we share space, all with the same goal in mind of keeping our children safe.

Thank you!
Dr. Paul McDermott
Superintendent
